Hi! To commemorate my 100th post and the wonderful recent accusation of being suicidal and the "SAVE TINA" campaign that involved invading my privacy, ignoring my protests that I was not suicidal, ignoring my pleas to just give me some space, and calling me about 10 times a day (OHOHOHOHO! TOO FUNNY. BY FUNNY I MEAN NOT FUNNY AND ACTUALLY REALLY FUCKING CREEPY), I would like to take this chance to BECOME SUICIDAL. That's right!

Last night, I think I dreamed of Benares.

The muddy water, the faded colors of the buildings, the temples and the corpses; they all seem so eerily similar. I remember reading about this place in a book not too long ago, and seeing photographs on the internet.

Benares, or Varanasi, is one of the holiest of cities in India, known for both its purity and its material filth. By bathing in the Ganges, which runs along the east of the city, one is cleansed of sins. It is also believed that when one dies in Benares, he escapes the cycle of rebirth (the Lethe is the evil twin of the Ganges? BUT OH NOES WHICH IS THE 'EVIL' ONE?). For this reason, funerals here are common sight, and typically bodies are only partially cremated before they are allowed to drift into the river waters. It is common to witness a half-rotting corpse float along the surface.

On these same banks, the locals drink and bathe, never flinching at the sight of bloated corpses, some being picked at by crows or wild dogs.

Of course, in reality, I’m sure the corpses never reanimated themselves to walk in the same streets with the living, as they did in my dream. But how different is it really? After all, both are democratizations of the living and the dead, so that decay (The new kid at work’s name is pronounced “decay”, though he spells it DK...?) is integrated in the bodies of the living (as it always is, though without acknowledgment). I went bathing, stepping in the shallows before being woken by the rapid tensing of twitching fingers…

Sometimes, I position myself in subway cars so that I am directly in front of a window. And when the train moves out of the station and into those networks of subterranean tunnels, I can see the reflections of faces behind me, dampened in shadow. The reflected image is two dimensional; depth is replaced with dark, so that hollow eyes, sunken cheeks, and caverns of wrinkles, all of which in reality recede into space, appear as pools of black ink. I want to dip my fingers into that murky depth, to collect and channel it into the act of creation.

It is all too easy to get accustomed to watching reflections. My lingering thoughts seem to say that if this glass should break, all knowledge would be lost. And I know that all I would have to do is reorient my body and turn my back to the now empty window and open my eyes. The worst feeling is when you have no choice but to turn, attempting to avoid the sudden force of shattering glass. But somehow, you always find tiny shards of broken images embedded into your flesh.

Why did that dream trigger yesterday…? Something about the banality of a bare feet and a boy whose face was turned away from me while playing with a dog…?

I hate splinters. I just want to go Benares and immerse myself in those waters.

I find myself writing more lately, which is strange. Language makes everything too easily transparent, which is why I find myself straying from it often. But for the first time, I find that I want to be understood…? But a part of me still wants to smother this newfound wish.

IN ANY CASE. I went to kinko's today to ask about printing. Apparently it's going to cost me 80 bucks to print 5 copies of that booklet. Goddamn.

But I've been trying to do some "graphic design" or whatever lately, in an attempt to pretty-fy a piece of writing that I started (which is also not done -- typical).

...Someone commented that he was confused on why I had such an "emotional attachment" to an otherwise "well written science report." Well, fuck you kid. I can't help that I can only speak in metaphors. And it's not my fault that I feel an emotional attachment to space because most of the time I feel like an alien, and I just want to go home. Like E.T, or Seccom Masada, with the googly eyes. I just need a space ship.

I COULD show the cover, but that would give everything away, I think. I'd rather have it be ambiguous to what it's actually about, because it most likely will not see the light of day. And no, you're not supposed to be able to make out the text here.

If anybody could actually give me some tips on how to print this, I would love them forever. ;__;

So. Loreley is somewhat of a German variation of a siren or a nymph of sorts. She sits on the rocks along the Rhein combing her long golden hair, and humming all the while as she waits for a sailor that she once loved. But he never comes. And in her bitterness, she continues to wait, luring ships to their doom in order to pacify her grief. Over time, her once golden hair turns to silver with age. Her skin blackens, tarnished from weathering years of hail and flood. But time passes. She corrodes, disintegrates, and what is left of her turns into tar and drains into the Rhein, where the bones of once would-be lovers have laid for so long, waiting just to hear her voice. The river grows dark.

UH I DON’T KNOW. My internet connection has been out, so I’ve been bored. I suck at writing now. I’ll go crawl back to my hole.

Okay, so I haven't been ENTIRELY up to nothing these months.

Um. I'm working 40ish hours a week during the summer until the end of July, when I finally fly over and spend a month at Universitaet Bonn for their summer program. Hopefully, I'll actually make new friends (crosses fingers) so I can go through Europe before I have to finish up my last semester at school. AGHGHGHGHGHGHG I CAN'T WAIT. I really have to decide what the fuck I'm going to bring there though. No big artworks when I'm there I guess. Guitar? Yay or nay? Here's some stuff.

AGH NEXT PROJECT THAT WILL TAKE FOREVER. Did you know that scanning a large format picture costs 8 bucks per scan at kinkos? And then they also charge for putting it on a CD. They refuse to let me put it on my own drive. I'm going to be so poor.

Some shenanigans I'm doing for work -- first one that I did that I actually kind of liked? Yes, it's lonely cactus again. In Adobe Illustrator this time. Hey, my boss lent me a macbook pro with CS installed already. The sound and video quality on that thing is so much better than my own laptop. ;__; I actually like how my voice sounds on it - maybe I'll actually go back to making videos again. If I have time.

GNOSIS: CREATION AND REDEMPTION

Oh. Hi. I haven't been here in a while. But this is something that I was working on for a class. Occasionally, the professors at my school let you do an "artsy" project, instead of a 10 page paper, so I always take that opportunity.

This is a mini-book of about 5 pages, with cutouts in the center. From one end, it's read as the gnostic myth of creation, and from the other end, it's read as redemption. I'm just going to cut and paste the explanation I handed in for the class. We were looking at Walter Benjamin's The Arcades Project. His theory is a lot more complex and convoluted than I make him out to be in this outline. I hope I got his reasoning right. :(

I. CREATION

II. REDEMPTION

I. The Gnostic Myth of Creation

(There are many variations of this myth, I’ve read multiple versions before, and I can’t seem to keep straight which goes with which. The names particularly are very different across texts, but the role is the same. The one I’ll try and reproduce here will contain only the main points, if a little abstractly. The items in the square parentheses represent the page number where this occurrence happens in the mini-book. C stands for creation, and R stands for redemption.)

In the beginning, there is one single divine source that is perfect and unknowable. It begins to think (or to speak) and that thought becomes a divinity, a mirror image of itself called Barbelo [C1]. Together, they create the aeons, typically coming in pairs; they are entities that together make up the sacred space called pleroma [C2]. The last aeon, however was lacking of a counterpart. Her name was wisdom, or Sophia. In her lonely bitterness, she creates another being from her thought alone, Ialdaboth, who has the face of a lion and the body of serpent [C3]. According to the Gnostics, Ialdaboth is the God of the Bible, and the demiurge. Because he is utterly deformed, Sophia hides him from the other aeons in the clouds of the lower heavens. Ialdaboth creates the material world, the angels and the demons (also known as archons) all of which become his servants [C4]. He and is ignorant of the higher realms, declaring himself the one and sole creator of the universe. Because his mother is an aeon, he retains a part of her divinity. Along with his archons, he creates Adam, who at this point, can only crawl and wriggle like a worm. Sophia, wanting to reverse the situation that she has created, descends as Eve, and tricks Ialdaboth into breathing the divine light into Adam. At this point, he can walk upright, and Ialdaboth and the archons recognize that they were tricked. They create fate to bind Adam and his future progeny in the material world, so that they can trap the divine spark within this world in which they reign [C5]. As mankind increases in population, the original divine light is scattered across generations, dividing as humankind populates the earth.

II. Relationship of Gnosticism to Walter Benjamin

a. Demiurge as Capitalism/Industrialism: The Gnostic demiurge creates the material world, responsible for the fallen state of man. In the same way, capitalism is responsible for man’s materialism and commodity fetishism. The extremely negative view of this state of man seems also to be a common binding between them? The majority of mankind is also ignorant of the possible higher condition outside materiality, or in the Benjaminian sense, outside consumerism?

i. Allegory: Emphasizes the “fallen” or ruined aspect of the human condition instead of giving the sense of a false totality, and becomes a vehicle of truth (Wolin, Richard. Walter Benjamin: The Aesthetics of Redemption)[R4].

b. Redemption through degrees: The goal of the Gnostics is to restore the universe to its once perfect state, in perfect union with the “all”. Everyone and everything in the material world holds a divine spark, and in death, this spark returns back into the all. Thus, it becomes everyone’s duty to overcome fate and the archons which guard the doors to pleroma [R1]. This is similar to the concept of Benjamin’s weak messianic power: everyone has the capability to redeem the world in pieces.

i. Gnostic redemption of objects is through consumption. The eating of a plant results in addition of that object’s spark to one’s own. The object becomes embedded with identity, much as it does when objects are consumed in modernity. Is this the opposite of redemption in the Benjaminian sense?

c. The role of knowledge: In order to be admitted into pleroma, and to surpass the archons, certain knowledge of truth, called gnosis, of the higher realms of divinity is needed. For objects (or even historical objects as events) to be redeemed, knowledge in the sense of truth must be extracted from the item. To make this point, I would ideally contain the work in transparent sheeting. In the Gnostic myth, finishing redemption, the returning of all the scattered divinity back into the source, would mean the disappearance of the material world. In Benjamin’s case, it would be the disappearance of the human condition as created by capitalism; the disappearance of alienation and the reinstatement of human relationships as the primary motives of action? This would be the “shock”, of “awakening from sleep” [R5] in the Benjaminian sense? Although the process of redemption is gradual, the outcome as we see it would be a drastically noticeable shift.

Please keep in mind that when I speak of the Oedipal complex, it is NOT about the slaying of any actual personal father, but of the symbolism behind the father. The father-figure represents the eternal lawgiver; therefore God is both a father-figure (in his creation of all of mankind) and a lawgiver (the commandments). The mother-figure, I am not entirely sure of, but again, it is never about the personal family members of the family, but what they represent in psyche. Just as the problem of incest that Freud speaks of is not the actual act of incest itself, but the desire of the child to commune with what the mother represents.

Pokemon are the ideal manifestation of the Oedipal wish. The pokemon universe creates a loophole where patricide is continually committed in a mitigated fashion, while avoiding the consequence of the eternal guilt that results from it, which Lacan states as being the major struggle of modernity. It is a psychic world of fantasy which is created from the collective anxieties and guilt of mankind.

Pokemon are creatures that are the embodiment of taboo, and at the same time, also the fear that enforces it. Fear has at its root, a combination of both love and hatred for a single object, and Pokemon represent this ambivalence through their dangerous ability to destroy, and the unbreakable bond of friendship that can form between them and their trainers. The traditional form that fear manifests in is the belief of demonic spirits, whose anger is aroused when a taboo is broken (Freud). Because Pokemon are given bodily forms, they are taken out of the abyss of repression, and now measurable, touchable and manipulable by human standards. Without bodily form, which occurs only from the reorganization of the abyssal matter (for it is impossible to create something out of nothing), the allegory of Pokemon would not be possible (Augustin).

In the pokemon universe, pokemon are the prosthetic tools through which the trainer (who takes the place of the child) acts. Without pokemon, action (i.e. Handlung, which is separate from work--arbeit and production--herstellen) is in a true sense is not possible in the pokemon world (Arendt). Thus, action and the ability to participate and alter the shared world is not tied with birth in this universe but must be earned through establishing a connection with pokemon. A child is born as a member into the pokemon universe only when it obtains a pokemon -- they become a part of the child's understanding of the self.

Some legendaries can be considered as Totems -- for they are the ones that produce the pokemon and the taboos that they represent. Mew, as the ancestor from which all pokemon spring from are one of these legendaries. Therefore, all pokemon are in a sense parts of Mew or Arceus. In the case of early mankind, the totem animal is a direct replacement of the primal father after the original patricide. To fulfill the latent wishes of mankind, the band of brothers that are responsible for the murder of the father create morality and religion to placate the guilt for the murder. But their desire to become the father, which was the origin for the murder in the first place, is fulfilled through the sacrificial meal, which later becomes the same communion that is carried out through various religious institutions. (The blood of Jesus turns into wine, etc). They eat the normally taboo totem animal in order to identify and absorb its powers. In the pokemon world, the sacrificial meal is carried out through Pokemon battles, where trainers' pokemon feast on the the experience points of their opponents to gain their power. Tamed pokemon, once again are prosthetic parts of the trainers, and no longer belong to the realm of the totem animal, for they are already claimed. Along with battles, the act of acquiring pokemon also fall into this category. Another purpose of the feast was to spread the responsibility of the murder to many participants. The entire series is focused on battling, and a huge network of trainers come together to form a community that works together to continually repeat the murder and the devouring of the totem animal. In the pokemon world, the role of religion is transferred to the act of pokemon battles.

Thus, pokemon is about the continual subversion of authority figures, by avoiding the consequences of the subversion itself. It is about giving the courage to children to carve out new archetypes for themselves by destroying the traditions that are portions of the father figure, represented by legendaries such as Arceus and Mew. Sadly though, it also gives a grim view about the success of this task. Since pokemon can never die, there is no possibility for this goal to be reached. Moreover, it must be stated that there are two levels of removal from the truth of the situation. The child never commits the subversion in real life, and in the child's head, the murder must be done symbolically. So although pokemon encourages the creation of new categories, the amount of distance makes it so that the child never 1. recognizes the true desire and 2. does not even need to commit the action in real life. It makes individuals that are passive in their actions and radical in their internal world.

I'm accomplishing very little, I know.

Last week, I was helping Jackie film -- which consisted of me sitting around and having long drawn out conversations with whoever was with me, and watching the equipment as old chinese ladies/dudes stared us down. Oh and we watched some fuzzy caterpillars -- and I found out later they weren't poisonous as it crawled down my arm. So...cute.

And now I've got an internship where I paint, chop wood and set things on fire. I don't know whether I should stay. My boss-man is an artist too, and he builds all these futuristic gadgets that have working parts. It's pretty cool. And I feel so manly. I'm planning to sneak into a bunch of lectures for the fall semester, so I don't know if I'll have the time to hold down 2 jobs as well. The only reason I was able to do that last year was because I went straight home. There are so many classes I want to take: astronomy, human evolution, neuro science, guuuuuhhhhh.

I'm also thinking about running into the math department...or a church and harassing someone to teach me about sacred geometry, which I don't think I'm getting an adequate understanding of from books alone.

So. I don't have much time. So I'll stall with some unfinished stuff. NO EXCUSES ONLY FAILURE. I'm just lazy. In my free time, I'm playing fire emblem, instead of doing anything productive.

But I did work on my "comic". I thought it would be way farther down by now.
